Did I miss my chance at life? (Life Balance & Goals)     May 10, 2010 10:30 AM

I am 26 and I want to know if it's too late for me to do something with my life. I have never had a job and I want one. (I am on social security disability for anxiety, social phobia, and panic disorder- they said I was "too disabled to benefit from vocational rehabilitation"- but I don't want to be on disability anymore.) I also want to go to college and become a teacher or school psychologist, but with the length of training required, I am afraid I will be too old by the time I get my degree. Is there any hope for me?

There is every hope for you. The human being is capable of so much, limited usually by your own belief system, although I appreciate some people have more handicaps then others.  You can get better. Take a look at this, it might inspire you.

Btw, I'm 41 and pondering this question (to become a teacher, a school psychologis), am I  too old? The answer is a resounding "no".

Go for it!

hello Theresa,

I am 43 and I am now pursuing my teaching career, working part-time as a teacher and studying to gain Qualified Teachers Status at the Institute of Education as a FE teacher.  if you are interested in taking this route to becoming a teacher, you might want to pursue a PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) course at a local college in your area for September 2010 which will only take about 4-6 months and if you pass your level 3-4 you will gain a PTLLS qualification which enables you to go on your DTLLS (Diploma to teach in the Life Long Learning sector). Teaching Adults can be equally as challenging as teaching children and it is never too late to further your teaching career.  So why not check it out? I hope you find this information useful.

O by the way, I enjoyed the UTube motivational video. It was very inspiring indeed! For when you think you have it bad, someone is in a worse position than you.  but this guy is clearly happy with getting on living his life and is clearly not giving up! Nice one!

MD

Hello Michelle,

Thanks for that!  Yes that has been on my mind too and keeps coming up as suggestion from friends and my self too. There is an equivalent qualification and pathway here in the TAFE (technical and further education ... vocational etc) sector.

I have done a TESOL (teaching english as a second language) certificate which I could leaverage off of too, as I would be interested in working with new immigrants to Australia with english language skills. So that is another pathway.

Yes, that man from the youTube vid is a reminder to me that the obstacles I face in achieving what I want to achieve are definitely not insummountable.

Thanks again.

Theresa
